Obama announces plans for US immigration reform

During his first major policy announcement since Osama Bin Laden’s death, United States president Barack Obama said in a speech on Tuesday, which was entirely on the subject of U.S. immigration reform, that he would be focusing on making life easier for illegal immigrants.

Obama to reintroduce DREAM Act

President Obama said he would be making an effort to give the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country a way to full citizenship while also reintroducing the DREAM Act: Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, which last year did not receive enough votes to make it to the Senate after it was passed by the House of Representatives.

Illegal immigrants make up almost four per cent of the United State’s population, but because of their illegal status they can find themselves “stuck” when it comes to living their lives. For example, they can’t buy a house, can’t pay taxes and their children can’t go to college or qualify for a scholarship.

In turn, this can deprive each state of billions of dollars in money it needs. In Germany, a similar situation created a national emergency.

The Globe and Mail wrote a great piece on the situation, likening the seriousness of the situation for immigrants to the war on terror. This article is available here
