Canadian Citizenship Application Backlog Becoming A Problem

Just under 300,000 Canadian Citizenship applications stuck in backlog

According to this CBC article, many people are caught up in a Canadian Citizenship application backlog that is affecting people’s travel plans. Ever since it became mandatory to hold a passport to travel between the United States and Canada, more people who have been born abroad but have been living in Canada for decades are finding themselves without the necessary Canadian Citizenship paperwork to obtain a passport in order to travel freely between the countries. And once they apply, some are finding the wait times extremely long – with some individuals waiting several years to hear back.

Apply for Canadian Citizenship as soon as possible

Due to the backlog, any travel plans you have may be delayed if your Canadian citizenship application is not processed quickly enough. If you do apply for Canadian Citizenship in the coming weeks, it would be wise to have your application looked over by an experienced immigration lawyer to avoid mistakes that can have your application returned to you instead of processed – doubling your wait time.

Another option if you have already applied for Canadian Citizenship is contacting your local MP, who may be able to get to the bottom of the problem and have your Canadian Citizenship application processed faster if it is just sitting on a desk somewhere.
