A Bit More On Canada’s New Immigrant Entrepreneur Program

Consultations begin for entrepreneur immigration program

We recently blogged about the Canadian government considering a brand-new Canadian Entrepreneur Immigration program after they cancelled the program after ten years with little notice. The entrepreneur immigration program was popular, and had a backlog of 10,000 applications from interested entrepreneurs.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada has provided an official press release on the subject, announcing that they are launching consultations with industry associations to create a start-up visa program for entrepreneurs, and these consultations will take place over the next few months.

The program will be a trial program, and if it is considered successful the Canadian immigration department will legislate it into an official immigration stream.

According to the press release, “This ‘start-up’ visa initiative is an example of the type of small-scale programs that would allow Citizenship and Immigration Canada to try innovative approaches to economic immigration. Under the proposed changes, the government could crease new, short-term programs under the Economic Immigration Class. These programs would be limited to no more than 2,750 applications per year and would end after give years.”

It continues, “If a program proves successful during the five-year trial period and the department wishes to maintain it, Citizenship and Immigration Canada would be required to formally introduce the new economic class in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.”
