Happy 4th of July 2012: America Welcomes New US Citizens

To celebrate America’s 236th Independence Day, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will welcome more than 4,000 new citizens during special naturalization ceremonies from June 28 through July 10 across the country.  Once these 4,000 people take their Oath of Allegiance and become U.S. citizens, they will encompass all the rights and responsibilities of US citizenship enshrined in the country’s founding documents.

US Citizenship Swearing-in Ceremony

Along with the swearing-in of new citizens, this year’s prize ceremony will be held at the White House on July 4 where President Obama is scheduled to welcome 25 armed services members from 17 different countries as new Americans.  In addition, special naturalization ceremonies will be held at Independence Hall in Philadelphia; Comerica Park in Detroit; the National World War II Museum in New Orleans and among other national historical monuments.

Activities in the White House

Independence Day celebrations are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. EST with a concert hosted by country music star Brad Paisley live on the South lawn of the White House which is being organized by the USO to honor members of the U.S. military and their families.  Following the concert, the “National Mall fireworks” show will be held which can be viewed live at WhiteHouse.gov/live.

Independence Day celebrations have been hosted by Presidents over the years which generally include picnics and family gatherings on top of fireworks.  However, this year’s “A Capitol Fourth,” the PBS Independence Day celebration is promised to be the biggest celebration yet.    Hosted by Tom Bergeron, the celebration will include a cast consisting of “American Idol” winner Phillip Philips, Broadway-movie-TV stars Matthew Broderick, Kelli O’Hara and Megan Hilty, and singer-songwriter Javier Colon among others.
