New York Mayor calls for US visa reform

Mayor Bloomberg says no United States visa reform is “national suicide”

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that United State’s lack of immigration reform is “suicide” in a speech to the United States Council of Foreign Relations last month, telling those on hand that the United State’s economy would suffer if it was not easier for hard-working people to obtain a United States visa.

“We will not remain a global superpower if we continue to close our doors to people who want to come here to work hard, start businesses and pursue the American dream… it’s what I call national suicide, and that’s not a hyperbole,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “American companies founded by immigrants or their children have revenues that are greater than the gross national product of every country in the world outside the United States, except two: China and Japan,” he continued.

Several key organizations have called for United States visa reform in order to make it easier for immigrants to come to the United States and help the economy, but so far many other issues have taken priority. Mayor Bloomberg has been a major supporter of making it easier for immigrants to get visas and become United States citizens, as well as for the estimated 10 million illegal immigrants in the country to have a better way to legal status.

“The reason is simple. Immigrants are dreamers and risk-takers who are driven to succeed, because they know that in America hard work and talent are rewarded like nowhere else,” he said.
