More Chinese citizens taking French lessons to immigrate to Quebec

Many choosing immigration to Quebec

Unlike many federal and provincial immigration programs, the province of Quebec does not have a cap on the number of immigrants it can select. The only catch is, immigrants must demonstrate their French language skills in order to be accepted to immigrate to Quebec.

According to this article in the Winnipeg Free Press, thousands of Chinese citizens are hoping for a better future for themselves and their children by enrolling in French lessons. Over the last year or so, sales of French language lessons increased by 14 per cent. The majority are immigrating in order to get better education for their children.

Some of the French lessons are also geared specifically towards Quebec, and teach the students a bit about Quebec’s history. Quebec also needs more immigrants and skilled workers or immigrant investors are the most sought-after.

China still maintains a strict one-child policy in many places, and the government is unable to address problems that include contaminated food and pollution. In addition, free speech is not tolerated especially if it is considered anti-authority, and even print and the internet are censored.

Some of the other favourite immigration destinations are Australia and the United States, but they are more restrictive. Even the rest of Canada has restrictions that can make it difficult, but immigration to Quebec remains an attractive option if you have the French language skills.
