How To Renew A Permanent Residence Card

Permanent residents in Canada are given a Permanent Residence Card (PR Card) that is an identity document when they travel in and out of Canada. Upon landing in Canada, permanent residents will be provided with a Permanent Residence Card.

Renewing a Permanent Residence Card

A Permanent Residence card is valid for five years, and then it needs to be renewed. If your Permanent Residence Card is expiring soon, you should apply to renew it as soon as possible. This application will disclose information about your travel outside of Canada and your employment history, and help the immigration officer who is in charge of processing your application to determine if you meet residency obligations in Canada.

It can take several weeks to renew a Permanent Residence card, which is why it’s important that you apply for a Permanent Residence card renewal at least two months before your current Permanent Residence card expires.

Depending on your situation, you may be able to expedite the processing period for your Permanent Residence Card renewal.

Permanent Residence Card renewal refused

If your Permanent Residence Card renewal is refused because you may not meet the residency requirements in Canada, you may be able to formally request an exemption under humanitarian and compassionate grounds.

Speak to one of our lawyers today using the form on the right if you have concerns about being refused for a Permanent Residence Card renewal, if you need assistance with an appeal, or if your Permanent Residence Card is expiring soon.
