More Canadian Immigrants Moving West

Recent information published by Statistics Canada is showing the immigrants to Canada are finding great success in the Western provinces like Alberta.

This paper by Statistics Canada is showing that immigrants to Canada are thriving in Western provinces, particularly in the area of employment. Western Canada

In fact, in 2011, the province of Alberta had the highest rate of employment for immigrants, even higher than that of Canadian-born workers.

While the recent economic recession took a toll on all Canadians and immigrants, immigrants were less hard hit in the Western provinces. For example, according to the paper in 2011 more than half of immigrant employment growth occurred in British Columbia and the Prairies, while Manitoba immigrants only have a six per cent jobless rate. Job growth among recent immigrants has doubled between the years 2008 and 2011 in the province of Saskatchewan.

“Employment among immigrants of core working age (25 to 54) increased notably in 2011, following a tepid recovery in 2010,” said the report. “This pushed their unemployment rate down 1.1 percentage points to 8.4 per cent, while their employment rate edged up to 75.6 per cent. At the same time, the employment rate for the Canadian born increased 0.5 percentage points to 82.9 per cent.”

Currently, immigrants in Canada account for 67 per cent of the population’s growth, but are expected to account for up to 80 per cent of population growth by the year 2031.
